To make a day of it

Château des Tourelles stands in Vernon (Eure), in the Normandie region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 13th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

In Vernon, on the right bank of the Seine, the château des Tourelles still shows the outline of a fortified bridge tower built at the end of the 12th century on the orders of Philip Augustus. Its square shape, flanked by four round turrets, has passed through eight centuries of different uses as a fortress, a flour mill, a tannery and a barracks, before being badly damaged by the bombings of 1944. The late 20th century rebuilding work, particularly on the west turret destroyed by an Allied bomb, remains visible in the stonework, caught between faithfulness to the original and deliberate signs of modern intervention.
