To make a day of it

Château du Neubourg stands in Le Neubourg (Eure), in the Normandie region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 13th century, 16th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

In the heart of Le Neubourg, in the Eure department, this medieval castle was one of the Duchy of Normandy's strongholds in the Middle Ages, passing successively through the hands of the Beaumont, Meulan and Vieux-Pont families. Half demolished at the end of the 18th century to make way for a market square, it still retains a fortified front stretching some 120 metres, with towers, a curtain wall and a drawbridge gate, along with a 13th-century hall and the early 16th-century Maison-Neuve. It was in the hall's great room, known as the Ancienne Comédie, that Corneille's opera La Toison d'or was first performed in 1660.
