Perched on a limestone cliff above a bend in the Seine and the town of Les Andelys, the remains of Château-Gaillard recall the rivalry between Richard the Lionheart and Philip Augustus at the close of the twelfth century. Built at speed to guard the approach to Rouen, the stronghold fell to the French king in 1204, sealing the end of Plantagenet rule in Normandy. What survives today are stretches of wall, a keep, and wide views over the river valley.
