The Château de Gaillon overlooks the Seine valley in the commune of Le Val d'Hazey, in the Eure department. Built on the remains of a medieval fortress dismantled in the 15th century, it was later transformed by Cardinal Georges d'Amboise into a palace inspired by Italian architecture, regarded as the first Renaissance building in France. Visitors can walk through the courtyard of honour, the chapel and the remnants of gardens designed by artists brought from Italy and the Loire valley. The site still bears traces of centuries of conflict, reconstruction and changing uses, before being listed as a historic monument.
