To make a day of it

Château d'Épinal stands in Épinal (Vosges), in the Grand Est region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: Middle Ages, 10th century, 13th century, first half of the 19th century). Admission is free. Its opening hours and prices were verified at the source on August 7, 2026.

Épinal castle stands on a sandstone ridge overlooking the town and the Moselle valley, at an elevation of 387 metres. Visitors find the remains of a medieval stronghold built in the 13th century under the bishop of Metz, Jacques de Lorraine, later adapted for artillery warfare before being destroyed on the orders of Louis XIV in 1670. The grounds also hold a 19th-century landscaped park with garden follies set among the fortress ruins and the keep.
