In Dordives, in the Loiret department, the castle of Mez-le-Maréchal stands in ruins beside the Betz stream, in a valley once crossed by the Roman road linking Sens to Orléans. Its square 13th-century enclosure, marked by four round towers and a gate flanked by two more, surrounds a tall rectangular keep begun as early as the late 12th century. Visitors can still make out the gate's murder-hole, grooves left by a vanished portcullis, a spiral staircase and a small vaulted oratory tucked into one of the corner turrets. The whole structure has undergone no major alteration since the Middle Ages, making it a rare surviving example of 12th-century military architecture.
