Built at the end of the 12th century by Gauthier de Villebéon, chamberlain to kings Louis VII and Philippe Auguste, this fortress once guarded a ford on the Loing river at the edge of the kingdom facing Champagne. Surrounded by the river on three sides, it has housed the Château-Musée de Nemours since 1903, devoted to the history of the Gâtinais region. It stands today as one of the few urban castles in Île-de-France preserved almost whole, with its towers, ramparts and the gate known as the Porte de Monsieur.
