Set on a hilltop above the village of Septème, in the Isère region, this castle complex combines the remains of an 11th-century fortress, a fortified enclosure about one kilometre long dating from the 13th century, and a residence built in the 14th and 15th centuries and later reworked during the Renaissance. Visitors can walk along ramparts pierced with arrow slits, see a keep raised in height in the 16th century, a courtyard with a well over sixty metres deep, and a French-style garden with an early 20th-century orchard where peacocks roam freely. The estate has remained in the hands of the family that acquired it under the Empire and still lives there today.
