To make a day of it
Château de Rougemont stands in Rougemont-le-Château (Territoire de Belfort), in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: fourth quarter of the 12th century, 13th century, 14th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Perched on a hilltop overlooking the gateway to Alsace, 736 metres above sea level, the ruins of Rougemont castle recall a stronghold built in the late 12th century by the counts of Ferrette. Destroyed by fire in 1375, the site yielded a rich collection of military and religious artefacts during excavations, now held at the Belfort museum. Visitors can make out a circular keep that replaced an earlier square tower, along with the outline of the lord's residence.
