The château de Lazenay stands on the edge of Bourges, along the banks of the Auron river, a short distance from the cathedral and the great tower of Philippe Auguste. What remains today is a medieval gatehouse dwelling, the last trace of a much larger estate, built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries for a wealthy Bourges merchant. It still shows a square gate pierced with pointed arches and an adjoining living block lit by carved twin windows, rare surviving examples of civil architecture from that period in the region.
