At the heart of the village of Sagonne, in the Cher department, stands a fortress dating from the 14th century, built by the house of Sancerre to watch over the road between Bourges and Sancoins. The Babou family, then Jules Hardouin-Mansart, the architect of Versailles, made it their residence and left their mark: the former in the 16th century, the latter in the early 18th, tearing down the eastern curtain walls to open views onto gardens. Visitors today can see four sloped-base towers rising from the moat, a 15th-century arched gateway, a courtyard facade with moulded windows, and coffered wooden ceilings preserved throughout the buildings.
