Château de Lienesse stands in Neuilly-en-Dun (Cher), in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: first half of the 16th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.
Lienesse castle, located in Neuilly-en-Dun in the Cher region, reflects three distinct building periods from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance. A fortified building constructed in the late 15th century, featuring two corner towers and a central stair tower, was extended in the early 16th century by a Renaissance wing decorated with sculptural ornament. The site originally centered on a square courtyard bordered by curtain walls and surrounded by moats, now vanished. A comprehensive restoration undertaken in the late 19th century by architect Camus preserved its principal structures.
What to know
- The historic monument inscription specifically covers the circular dovecote, whose Renaissance architecture retains its twisted colonette decoration and ornamental pilasters.
- The gallery of the western lodge features on the first floor three rectangular bays separated by prismatic and twisted colonettes with square capitals, characteristic of Renaissance ornament.
- The circular dovecote, decorated with two bands of perforated cordons containing windows, preserves inside its terracotta nesting alcoves and its original rotating ladder.
- The moats that once surrounded the entire castle have completely disappeared from the landscape.
