In the Cher department, a fortress overlooking the Allier river had to be rebuilt after fighting between Armagnacs and Burgundians left the earlier stronghold in ruins, and the reconstruction dates from the later 1400s. Five towers joined by curtain walls make up the fortified core still standing, while a manor house nearby gained an additional storey early in the 17th century. Industrialist Eugène Schneider then called on decorator De Galéa between 1934 and 1942 to rework the building in a neo-Gothic, romantic spirit that it retains today. Since the 18th century the Brissac family has owned the estate, and it was they who created the flower park starting in 1970.
