What the French Ministry of Culture records
Ce château commandait la seule voie longeant la rivière, d'où sa position fortifiée dès le Moyen-Age. Après la guerre civile entre Armagnacs et Bourguignons, l'édifice fut reconstruit dans la seconde moitié du 15e siècle. Cinq tours reliées par des courtines peuvent dater de cette campagne. Au début du 17e siècle, le logis est surélevé d'un étage et percé de nouvelles baies. Au 19e siècle, le château est restauré et les écuries édifiées à l'emplacement de l'ancienne verrerie royale qui avait été fondée en 1752. La galerie qui reliait la tour du Bourg à celle de la chapelle est abattue. De 1934 à 1942, la reconstruction du château est commanditée par Eugène Schneider et réalisée par le décorateur De Galéa en style néo-gothique.
