The château du Marais stands in Gimouille, in the Nièvre department, on a small island still ringed by its moat. Built in the 14th century on the site of a fortified watch house, it combines two façades from different periods: to the north, round towers pierced with long loopholes, to the south, a tall rectangular pavilion and a projecting square tower added under lord Jean Le Tort. Visitors can also see a chapel consecrated in 1517, a spiral staircase set in a corner turret, and, among the outbuildings, a 16th century dovecote.
