The château des Bordes stands in Urzy, in the Nièvre department, on the site of an 11th-century motte-and-bailey. The present building reflects a 15th-century reconstruction followed by substantial 16th-century remodelling, which turned a defensive stronghold into a residence for pleasure. The main range still holds a grand staircase with a stone balustrade, decorated fireplaces and old wall paintings. The estate also includes a carved early 17th-century gateway, outbuildings and terraces that give a sense of its former scale.
