What the French Ministry of Culture records

C'est à partir de 1519 que François Ier décida de remplacer l'ancienne forteresse des comtes de Blois par un château destiné à la chasse. Les limites actuelles du domaine royal sont celles qui furent fixées par Gaston d'Orléans, propriétaire du domaine de 1626 à 1660 (seul domaine royal conservé dans sa délimitation du 17e siècle). Le parc, de 5433 hectares, cerné par un mur de clôture, comporte six entrées. En 1682, Jules Hardouin-Mansart aménagea le domaine, avec le tracé géométrique du parc et la construction des écuries du maréchal de Saxe. Deux ponts construits en 1708 traversent le Cosson. En 1821, le domaine fut acquis par le futur comte de Chambord. Au cours du 19e siècle eurent lieu des campagnes de boisement, la création d'un jardin anglais dans la partie ouest, la réorganisation du village, le remaniement de l'église Saint-Louis (1830-1865) , etc. Le domaine a été acquis par l'Etat en 1930.
