Chambord is the largest of the Loire châteaux, begun in 1519 for François I within a forested estate enclosed by a 32 kilometre wall. Building work stretched over nearly three decades and involved several master builders, among them Pierre Nepveu, producing a double helix staircase at the heart of the keep and a rooftop skyline of towers and chimneys overlooking the Sologne countryside. The estate, still within the boundaries set in the 17th century by Gaston d'Orléans, has belonged to the French state since 1930.
