What the French Ministry of Culture records

Le site a été utilisé dès la fin du 15e siècle pour y installer logis et jardins. Du 17e au 20e siècle, de grandes campagnes de travaux apportèrent nombre de transformations exécutées selon le goût du jour. Le premier logis était déjà en construction en 1461. De cette demeure subsistent quelques vestiges dont les ruines d'une chapelle. Au 16e siècle, François Ier aurait acquis le domaine pour le transformer en pavillon de chasse et le donner à son oncle et parrain. En 1545, le domaine devient propriété de Jean du Thier, protecteur de Ronsard et de Du Bellay, qui réalise le château actuel dont les travaux s'étendent de 1553 à 1559, la partie antérieure ayant été démolie au 19e siècle. Au 17e siècle, le nouveau propriétaire fait réaliser les galerie des Illustres et ajouter deux ailes basses, encadrant la cour en vis-à-vis, pour lesquelles il fait démolir le logis du 15e siècle en 1622. Ces deux ailes disparaîtront au 19e siècle. Au 19e siècle est créé le parc à l'anglaise. Au début du 20e siècle, travaux et restaurations se poursuivent, notammant avec l'aménagement du parc et la réhabilitation des communs.
