A few kilometres from Blois, at the border of the Russy forest, stands the château de Beauregard, whose current appearance dates largely from the mid-16th century, when Jean du Thier, secretary of state to Henry II, had the gallery connecting the two living quarters built. Paul Ardier later, in the following century, furnished this gallery with over three hundred portraits of political figures spanning the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, creating what became known as the Gallery of Illustrious Men. Within the grounds, the remains of a chapel older than the 15th century testify to the site having been occupied well before that period. Protected as a historic monument, the estate opens its ground-floor rooms to visitors.
