What the French Ministry of Culture records

L'ancien évêché, oeuvre de Jacques-Jules Gabriel, date des premières années du 18e siècle. Surplombant deux grandes terrasses, il domine la ville. La façade méridionale qui s'ouvre sur les jardins comporte trois étages ; chaque façade est décorée en son milieu par un large fronton. On accède à la cour d'honneur par un beau portail en plein cintre qui paraît appartenir au projet de Gabriel ; il est encadré de pilastres doriques, supportant une corniche et un fronton. A l'extrémité de la terrasse, se trouve un petit pavillon circulaire, couvert par un dôme revêtu d'ardoises en forme d'écailles, qui date de l'époque Louis XVI.
