At Villandry, a few kilometres from Tours, a Renaissance château is best known for its reconstructed gardens. The 14th century keep, the sole remnant of the former fortress of Colombiers, stands alongside the residence built in 1532 by Jean Le Breton, secretary of state to François I. The gardens, spread across three terraced levels, combine an ornamental kitchen garden, box hedge patterns and a water garden, all recreated in the early 20th century by Joachim Carvallo from historical sources.
