Château de Chappe stands in Bourges (Cher), in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: second half of the 16th century, limite 17th century 18th century, fourth quarter of the 19th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.
What the French Ministry of Culture records
La terre relevait de la seigneurie de Maubranches-Villemenard. Le corps de logis du manoir a été construit entre 1556 et 1584. L'existence d'une motte témoigne de la permanence d'un habitat seigneurial sur le site. Les structures anciennes d'une maison forte, dont les tours d'angle du château actuel sont les vestiges, servirent de base à la construction de l'hôtel du 16e siècle. Après les guerres de Religion, les bâtiments furent restaurés aux 17e et 18e siècles. Le château a conservé le plan habituel d'un manoir médiéval, en forme de quadrilatère fermé, défendu par des tours aux angles de la cour autour de laquelle se répartissaient les bâtiments de service. Un jardin clos aux murs agrémentés de tourelles, descendait vers la rivière. Les bâtiments agricoles étaient regroupés dans deux cours situées de part et d'autre du manoir. Ce manoir est très représentatif de l'évolution d'une petite seigneurie rurale implantée aux portes de la ville.
