In Gannat, in the Allier department, this 14th century castle is built on a square plan closed by four machicolated towers linked by crenellated curtain walls. Originally standing outside the town's ramparts and surrounded by a moat, the building ceased to be lived in at an early stage and later served as a prison until the early 20th century. Visitors come mainly for the military architecture rather than any interior decor, since the site's interest lies in its well preserved defensive outline.
