To make a day of it

Château de Beauverger stands in Saulzet (Allier), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 15th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

On the edge of Saulzet, along the road to Escurolles, the château de Beauverger displays a large rectangular hall flanked by round towers, a legacy of 15th century defensive architecture. The building has kept its medieval outline despite 19th century alterations, when two corner towers were pulled down and the machicolations reworked. Visitors can still make out the central stair turret, the mullioned windows and traces of the old gated entrance once protected by a portcullis. The original timber roof frame survives and remains one of the building's notable features.
