In Escurolles, in the Allier department, this 15th century castle was built by Jean, bastard of Bourbon and bishop of Le Puy, on the site of an earlier fortress. Its rectangular layout encloses an inner courtyard, with the entrance guarded by two towers built into the surrounding wall, while a north gate opens between two round towers. The whole reflects the castle architecture typical of the Bourbon region in the later Middle Ages.
