To make a day of it

Château des Étourneaux stands in Montluçon (Allier), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 15th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

In Montluçon, the Château des Étourneaux is a 15th-century fortified house surrounded by moats, built for an illegitimate child of Duke Jean II of Bourbon. Its two-storey main building retains a square stair tower with an attached turret, two hooded fireplaces and mullioned windows set into a façade that still shows signs of its defensive purpose, including a gunport and two arrow slits. The building is worth seeing for its clearly preserved feudal architecture, a rare surviving example of this type of moated house from the late Middle Ages in the Bourbonnais region.
