Edifié à l'époque romane, reconstruit partiellement au 15e siècle, remanié aux 17e et 18e siècles, le château rassemble les différents styles qui se sont succédés dans le Bourbonnais. Le château se dresse sur un lieu qui fut peut-être voué aux dieux celtiques, "fanu" signifiant "lieu consacré". La tradition voulait qu'un escalier, descendant du puits, aujourd'hui disparu, à un ruisseau, ait été construit par les druides et que ce ruisseau ait été une divinité gauloise. L'entrée du château était défendue par deux tours, les murailles étaient garnies de créneaux, mais l'aspect militaire de l'édifice a été effacé. Seuls les bâtiments d'habitation ont été conservés. Trois corps de bâtiments s'ordonnent autour d'une cour intérieure. L'ancien donjon est prolongé par une aile remaniée au 18e siècle. Dans l'aile parallèle à celle-ci se trouve la cuisine romane. Le donjon est accessible par une porte en plein cintre accostée de deux pilastres supportant un entablement formé de deux corniches moulurées encadrant une frise nue, pouvant dater du 16e ou 17e siècle. Présence de caves datant du 11e siècle, restes du château primitif rasé à la suite d'événements inconnus et remplacé sans doute au 15e siècle par le château actuel.
