To make a day of it

Château de Chalus stands in Chalus (Puy-de-Dôme), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 14th century, 15th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Standing above the Allier valley and the Lembron basin, the Château de Chalus displays the remains of an Auvergne stronghold begun in the 11th century and later reworked in the 14th and 15th centuries. The property is privately owned and cannot be visited inside, though its cylindrical keep remains visible from the outside and reflects a rare combination of defensive and residential medieval architecture. The interior, not open to the public, is known to preserve a polygonal chamber called the council room and 15th century wall paintings.
