Le fief de Banassat dépendait de la châtellenie de Chantelle. Le château a été édifié au 13e siècle, fortement remanié au 16e. Il se compose de deux corps de bâtiments principaux reliés entre eux par un mur d'enceinte. Au nord-ouest du corps de bâtiment nord est accolé un porche. Ces deux corps de bâtiment délimitent une cour intérieure. Les deux corps de bâtiment sont reliés entre eux par les restes d'un mur d'enceinte dont le caractère défensif reste marqué par la porte fortifiée. Le porche fortifié s'ouvre dans une tour entre deux contreforts, surmonté d'une échauguette en partie ruinée. La porte s'ouvrait sous un arc en tiers point, appareillé avec un double chanfrein. Un couronnement défensif avait été édifié à l'extérieur, en partie écroulé en son centre. Sur les murs, voisinent des percements d'époque gothique, Renaissance et des temps modernes.
