Schloss Birkenfeld stands at Maroldsweisach, in the Landkreis Haßberge, in Bavaria, on the foundations of an earlier moated stronghold. Built between 1738 and 1752 for Johann Philipp Friedrich von Hutten, the complex was planned as a unified rural villa, combining the main residence, farm buildings and a courtyard of honour in a single design that was unusual for its time in Lower Franconia. Inside, the eighteenth-century decoration survives to an unusual degree, with stucco work and frescoes by several artists linked to the Ansbach court, including a dining room entirely painted with scenes from Greek mythology.
