To make a day of it
Veste Heldburg stands in Heldburg (Landkreis Hildburghausen), in Thuringia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Heldburg Fortress crowns a former volcanic cone rising more than a hundred metres above the small town of Heldburg, at the southern edge of the Hildburghausen district. Founded in the Middle Ages, it was turned into a Renaissance residence from 1560 under the court architect Nikolaus Gromann, and later reshaped in the 19th century as a historicist seat of the Dukes of Saxe-Meiningen. Since 2016 its restored buildings have housed the Deutsches Burgenmuseum, dedicated to the history and typology of castles. Its silhouette, visible from far away, earned it the nickname the "Franconian Light", a counterpart to the Veste Coburg, the "Franconian Crown", seen from its walls.
