Schloss Sternberg stands on a hill near the Büchelberg, on the site of a medieval burg founded in 1199 by the counts of Henneberg-Sternberg. The present four-winged baroque residence, framed by onion-domed corner towers, was built between 1667 and 1669 for Wolff Dietrich Truchseß von Wetzhausen, reportedly to a design by the Capuchin friar Matthias von Saarburg. Its architecture follows a symbolic calendar scheme: four towers for the seasons, twelve chimneys for the months, fifty-two doors for the weeks and, according to tradition, three hundred sixty-five windows for the days of the year. A chapel dated 1673 adjoins the main building, its portal facing north.
