To make a day of it
Schloss Hohenstein stands in Ahorn (Landkreis Coburg), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Hohenstein stands on a wooded sandstone ridge at Ahorn, in the Landkreis Coburg, Bavaria. First recorded in 1306 as a medieval Burg, it was burned down by rebellious peasants in 1525 and later rebuilt as a Renaissance residence by the von Lichtenstein family from 1573 onward. Visitors today find a building shaped by centuries of alterations, including a round tower, a tall gatehouse and a manorial chapel dating from the 17th century, set within a landscaped park inspired by the English garden tradition.
What to know
- The castle today houses a hotel and restaurant run by tenants, which limits free access to parts of the building.
- The 17th-century manorial chapel, with its carved 1688 pulpit, can be visited within the former medieval enclosure.
- The landscaped park, laid out over more than 150 years by the von Imhof family, also hosts contemporary art installations from the Oskar Hacker Foundation.
- As no opening hours or admission fees are given in the verified facts, visitors should check directly before coming.
- The site lies about six kilometres southwest of Coburg, in Upper Franconia, Bavaria.
