To make a day of it
Lauterburg (Coburger Land) stands in Rödental (Landkreis Coburg), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Lauterburg stands on the Spitzberg hill above Oberwohlsbach, part of Rödental in Bavaria. A first hilltop castle was founded here around 1150, later replaced around 1700 by a baroque hunting lodge built for the dukes of Saxe-Meiningen and later Saxe-Gotha. Left unfinished and without a complete roof, the building decayed for over a century until its remaining walls, at risk of collapse, were demolished with explosives in 1959. What remains today is a mound of rubble among the old foundations, including a vaulted 16th-century cellar that can still be entered.
What to know
- The site is a ruin reduced to foundations and a mound of rubble, with no standing building.
- Reaching it involves a walk uphill through the forest to the top of the Spitzberg.
- A vaulted 16th-century cellar, locally nicknamed the 'witch's kitchen', is still visible beneath the debris.
- As no opening hours or fees are set, the site can be visited freely, more like an outdoor spot than a monument.
- It suits a stop along a walk rather than a conventional castle visit.
