To make a day of it

Schloss Scheuerfeld stands in Coburg (Coburg), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Schloss Scheuerfeld stands at the centre of the Scheuerfeld district on the western edge of Coburg, inside grounds still outlined by the remains of a moat known locally as the Alter Bau. Built around 1590 for Nicolaus Zech, treasurer to Duke Johann Casimir, the house has kept its compact two storey form, a solid stone ground floor topped by a timber framed upper level clad in hand split slate. Since 1893 the building has served as the local Protestant parsonage, so it is not a site arranged for conventional sightseeing. Those aware of its past may be interested to know that a twenty five metre underground passage, found beneath the cellar only in the 1970s, is thought to have been an escape route in times of war.
