To make a day of it

Burg Dippach stands in Maroldsweisach (Landkreis Haßberge), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Dippach stands at the edge of the village of Dippach, part of the municipality of Maroldsweisach in the Landkreis Haßberge, Bavaria. What survives are the ruins of a small former moated stronghold, chiefly its gate tower and surrounding walls. Rather than a true fortress, the complex was originally a lightly fortified manor of the lower Franconian nobility, unlikely to have withstood a serious siege for long. Visitors can still see the rectangular enclosing wall, up to six metres high in places, and the barrel-vaulted gate tower, roughly twelve metres tall.

What to know

  • The site is an open-air ruin, with no known opening hours or entrance fee.
  • Only the gate tower and part of the surrounding walls remain, the interior residential buildings are gone.
  • The former moat has almost entirely disappeared, leaving only faint traces.
  • A former schoolhouse is attached to the outer side of the gate tower.
  • The site is listed as a Baudenkmal in Bavaria.
