Schachtenburg stands in Schlitz (Vogelsbergkreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 16th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Schachtenburg is one of five fortified houses that once formed part of the town walls of Schlitz, in Hesse. Built in 1557 by Elisabeth von Schachten, widow of a Hessian war councillor, it is notable for its late Gothic portal decorated with Renaissance ornamentation, including an interlaced pretzel motif bearing symbols of love, marriage and birth. A sandstone relief beside the doorway displays the coats of arms of the von Schlitz and von Schachten families, topped by a grimacing mask. Over the centuries the building served as a district court, later a retirement home, before being converted into a hotel in 2016.
