To make a day of it
Schloss Romrod stands in Romrod (Vogelsbergkreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Romrod stands in the valley between the Antrift and Ocherbach streams, on the site of a moated castle built by the lords of Romrod and first documented in the late 12th century. The property later passed to the landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt, who had it substantially rebuilt at the end of the 16th century and again remodelled between 1878 and 1885 as a summer residence for the grand-ducal family. Several building phases remain visible, from the medieval keep to the Renaissance main house and the kitchen wing. The former moat was filled in around 1830 and turned into a park.
What to know
- The Schloss today houses a hotel and the headquarters of a rural network organisation, which affects access to parts of the building.
- Archaeological excavations carried out between 1996 and 2002 uncovered remains of an earlier 12th-century timber fortress, not visible to today's visitor.
- The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Hesse.
- No opening hours, admission fees or accessibility details are available for a standard visit, so it is worth checking directly on site.
