Burg Wartenberg is a ruined castle set on a rocky spur above the Lauter stream, about a kilometre east of Angersbach. Built around 1220 by Friedrich von Angersbach, who later took the name von Wartenberg, it was destroyed in 1265 during a feud between the abbot of Fulda and the count of Ziegenhain. It was never rebuilt and has given its name and coat of arms to the municipality of Wartenberg, formed in 1972 from the merger of Angersbach and Landenhausen. Excavations carried out between 1828 and the early twentieth century, and again by Karl Maurer from 1938 to 1940, uncovered older remains beneath the castle, including Carolingian fortified farmsteads.
