Schloss Altenburg crowns a hill above the Schwalm river, within the town of Alsfeld. The present complex, combining medieval remnants with Baroque wings added in the eighteenth century, grew out of a Burg first recorded in 1178 and held for generations by the Riedesel zu Eisenbach family. Fragments of the old curtain wall and the ruined keep, which collapsed in the early nineteenth century, can still be traced among the farm buildings. A freestanding Baroque church from the mid-eighteenth century stands at the heart of the grounds.
