To make a day of it

Burg Niederschlitz stands in Schlitz (Vogelsbergkreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Niederschlitz, also known as Unterschlitz or locally as Burgscheidel, survives today only as an archaeological site near the town of Schlitz, marking the location of a former motte. Likely built in the 12th century by the lords of Schlitz to guard the old Hersfeld road, it was destroyed in 1261 during a feud between the abbot of Fulda and the abbot of Hersfeld together with the count of Ziegenhain, and was never rebuilt. What remains is a flattened mound about 1.5 metres high and 50 metres in diameter, topped by a stone monolith erected later. The moats that once surrounded the mound, fed by the Schlitz stream, have since been completely filled in.
