The Leuchtenburg crowns a 395 metre rocky cone above the Saale valley near Seitenroda. Founded in the 13th century by the lords of Lobdeburg, it went through markedly different roles over the centuries, an administrative seat, a wartime refuge, and later a workhouse and asylum well into the 19th century. Since the early 20th century it has housed a museum, now joined by the Porzellanwelten porcelain exhibition. A modern skywalk, the Steg der Wünsche, projects over the valley in contrast with the medieval walls.
