To make a day of it

Burgruine Tautenburg stands in Tautenburg (Saale-Holzland-Kreis), in Thuringia, Germany. Recorded dating: 11th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Tautenburg was a medieval stronghold established in the 11th century above the village of the same name, in the Saale-Holzland-Kreis district of Thuringia. Built by the lords of Tutinberc and later held by the Schenken von Tautenburg, the castle was largely torn down, leaving only its keep, the bergfried, standing today. Surrounded by the wooded hills of the Tautenburger Forst, this lone tower has long been a destination for walkers rather than a fully preserved monument. Visitors come mainly for the hiking trails and the view, rather than for extensive castle remains.

What to know

  • Only the keep of the former stronghold survives, the rest having been demolished after the medieval period.
  • The site is best reached on foot, as part of walking trails through the Tautenburger Forst woodland.
  • No opening hours, fees or accessibility information are provided for this site.
  • The nearby village offers other attractions, such as the Thuringian observatory, which can be combined with a visit to the tower.
