Founded in the high medieval period, it was the ancestral seat of the lords von Tannrode, first recorded in 1174, and passed through many owners, fires and rebuildings before falling into disuse after 1970. Visitors today find a round 12th century keep converted into a lookout tower, remains of the former residential building, and a site that also houses a restaurant, apartments and a local basket weaving museum.
