The Untere Sachsenburg is a ruined hilltop castle set on a wooded spur of the Hainleite range above the village of Sachsenburg, part of the municipality of An der Schmücke. Together with the Obere Sachsenburg, 450 metres away, it formed a pair of strongholds guarding the entrance to the Thuringian basin through the Unstrut gap. The surviving remains include the keep, sections of the curtain wall and vaulted cellars. Since 2002 the site has belonged to the Stiftung Thüringer Schlösser und Gärten foundation.
