The Obere Sachsenburg is a ruined castle standing above the village of Sachsenburg, on the wooded slopes of the Hainleite range in the Kyffhäuserkreis district. Built around the second half of the 13th century on a site already occupied in Frankish times, it still preserves its keep and the remains of the palas. Located roughly 450 metres from the Untere Sachsenburg, it once guarded the passage of the Thuringian Gate where the Unstrut river flows through.
