The Niederburg stands on a rocky spur above the Ilm valley, at the eastern edge of the town of Kranichfeld in Thuringia. Together with the neighbouring Oberburg, it forms one of the region's rare double castle sites, a legacy of the town's position on the old long-distance trade route linking Erfurt to Prague via Eger. The site is notable for its unusually large outer bailey, once enclosed by ramparts, ditches and several towers.
