Schloss Kromsdorf stands a few kilometres northeast of Weimar, on the banks of the Ilm, as part of a group of estates that also includes Schloss Tiefurt and Burg Denstedt. Built from 1580 for Georg Albrecht von Kromsdorf on the site of an earlier manor house, it was extended with a west and an east wing after 1666 under Baron Johann Theodor de Mortaigne. Ownership passed through many hands over the centuries, from the dukes of Saxe-Weimar to a chamberlain in the early twentieth century, each leaving their mark on the building and its grounds. The boundary between the original Renaissance structure and the later baroque additions can still be traced on the facade, as can the garden wall with its niches once meant for busts.
