The Weimarer Stadtschloss stands on the bank of the Ilm river, at the edge of the park that takes its name. This neoclassical four-wing building replaced a medieval moated castle that had burned down more than once, before becoming the residence of the dukes and later grand dukes of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. Visitors today can see the rooms dedicated to Goethe, Schiller, Herder and Wieland, along with the staircase and banqueting hall built after the 1774 fire. The Schloss belongs to the World Heritage ensemble known as Classical Weimar.
