The Wasserburg Kapellendorf stands in a valley hollow along the Sulzbach stream, in the middle of the village of the same name, between Jena, Weimar and Apolda. Founded in the 12th century by the burgraves of Kirchberg, it ranks among the best preserved strongholds in Thuringia, with its circular enclosure wall, the remains of a Romanesque residential building and a 14th century residential tower. Passed into the hands of the city of Erfurt in the mid 14th century, it still holds from that period its residential tower, the Kemenate, and a kitchen building with a large chimney. It now houses a museum, a branch of the Erfurt city museum, and also serves as a venue for events.
