Burg Ranis stands on a rocky spur above the Orla valley, overlooking the town of Ranis in Thuringia. A stronghold already existed here in the 11th century, but the building's present character comes largely from early 17th-century alterations, when a Renaissance wing with distinctive gabled dormers turned the medieval fortress into a more residential seat. Visitors can still make out the tall round keep, the compact inner castle and two broad outer courtyards that recall its old defensive role. Part of the complex now houses a museum devoted to the castle's history and to the nearby Ilsenhöhle cave hollowed into the rock below.
