To make a day of it

Wysburg stands in Remptendorf (Saale-Orla-Kreis), in Thuringia, Germany. Recorded dating: 10th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Wysburg, also known as Hohenwaldsburg or Hunnenburg, is a hilltop castle ruin above Remptendorf in Thuringia. Although the site is linked to the 10th century, the fortress whose remains still stand was built at the end of the 13th century by the Vögte of Gera, before being destroyed in the mid-14th century during the war against the Wettins. Excavations carried out since the 20th century have uncovered the outer bailey's service buildings, a keep, a palas, a large rock-cut cistern and the system of ditches and ramparts. The walls have been partly rebuilt, with red bricks marking the original height.

What to know

  • The site is an open-air ruin reached via a path leading to the top of the rocky spur.
  • A permanent exhibition about the excavations is housed in the Wysburg-Haus in the nearby village of Weisbach.
